To Michael Smith: You can obtain as many pro bono jobs as 24 hours will hold -- just pick an agency you are passionate about and ask. Every not-for-profit service agency needs extra hands and creative spirit to get their word out. Consider it a job - meet the deadlines and do what you promise to do. It's a great way to build a network as well.

Amanda,

You are right when you urge people to "toot" their "own horn" or, as we say in Scotland, "blow your own trumpet." Being seen as a blowhard can sometimes be the interpretation of such actions but, plenty of companies happily ignore that kind of response without the track record to support their claims and that makes me despair yet encouraged that I'm not in that landfill area.
I think it is important to declare your worth, your skills, your commitment, your contacts, your ideas, your dedication to clients - as opposed to saying or promising one thing. Talking a good game is, for me, is just not on.
I work hard for clients, offering great support, great value and results.

Your comments have been good to read and I wish you continued success.

Kind regards,
Mike

Thanks for the tips. Very timely considering I am a professional journalist looking to move in to PR. Any tips on how I can rack up pro bono work or consulting experience?
Best,

Mike

This is a truly excellent blog post. Too often writers do not know how to write about themselves, and you just laid out a master class of information that I will post and retweet out about the subject.

From Cecilia Pineda Feret | March 10th, 2009 at 12:30 am e

Hi Amanda, GREEEAT Post. I have recently restarted writing resumes AGAIN after an 8 year hiatus for people for a fee. And now also train them on how to use Social Media to their best advantage for career development and job search and networking. Personal branding . . .

Anyhow, I wanted to remind you that the bullet points in your sample resume excerpt should be in the 1st person. Not conducts, but conduct, not collaborates, but collaborate if these points are still being done or can be done.

It is your resume, so industry standard follows that it should be written in the 1st person while avoiding saying “I” . . .

I signed up for your newsletter/blog! Congratulations on a great product!
