You forgot the procrastinator. This is the person who is good at their job but forever late. They miss deadlines and have a ready excuse for why they did. Of course it is never their fault. They make life difficult because you have to stay on top of them to meet deadlines. They don't see the problem since the work is accurate when it is delivered. They subscribe to the better late than never policy.

This article mixes employment terminology with subcontractor terminology. Which is it? Subcontractors can be dismissed in a heartbeat - and ones displaying these traits should be.
Sounds like more thorough screening process and interviewing skills are needed. Absent that, pick a practice area where you don't need subs - or get some partners.
The time to screen any subs is before you need them - on the basis of their professional reputation. You'll identify both the good ones and the turkeys early on. Which ones you engage are up to you.

Nice piece. People bring traits and skills to their work. Humility's hard to find but worth the search.
