I figured you would. So I caught up with Journal Business reporter Lee Hawkins and asked him how he likes his pitches.

Thanks for watching!

    Hello,

He had some interesting and very relevant comments regarding how to pitch to journalists, nice post. As a communications professional with previous journalism experience, I know how important it is to understand the journalist’s world, work, constraints and interests. So it is crucial to take context into account when deciding the tone of the pitch, to make sure it will be convincing enough to get published.

Other than that, it looks like the video was done after a conference or presentation, but it might be better next time to have him speak in a separate room because there was significant background noise that interfered. Great blog though!

Lee was very informative and gave some great tips. Having worked with a few WSJ editors, it is also important to mention that they don’t hold embargoes. That’s a significant point if you are interested in giving WSJ an exclusive story.

Amanda – Keep posting great videos and providing your readers with great tips!

    Kudos!

Would be nice if the audio were better… Had trouble hearing his comments with all the peeps talking in the background.

  4. Thanks everyone for your comments.

Just a little background: I shot this video after Mr. Hawkins made a presentation on business reporting at a conference I was attending. This was not a pre-scheduled interview, and Mr. Hawkins only had a few moments before he was headed out to his next engagement.

Seizing the moment I grabbed what space I had. Had it been pre-scheduled, the sound (and lighting) quality surely would have been better.
