5 Time-Saving Apps Every PR Pro Should Be Using

As a habitual multitasker, I was born for the smartphone/tablet era. And I can’t imagine life without my iPhone and iPad  apps. Here are a few of my favorite time-savers that work well for the PR lifestyle. Most are available for iPad, iPhone and Android.

Uber – Never wait in the taxi line again

Available in most metropolitan cities, Uber is your car – in – a phone. Never wait in the taxi line, or wonder how you (or your client) will get home after that late night client event again. With uber on your phone, you don’t have to stress the logistics of transportation – that’s taken care of. You can even use it to have your clients picked before big interviews, speaking engagements or meetings.

Today – A convenient way to watch the Today Show

If you’re not able to catch the show when it airs, the Today Show app is a fantastic way to keep up with the top lifestyle topics of the day. Use the app to stay abreast of top national news trends, which you can then use to inform PR pitches in your local market.

Over – Make your photos say something

Since we know that photos speak louder than words, why not put your message atop  a photo to really drive the message home? There are a ton of photo rendering apps, but I like Over the most. It’s simple and easy to use. Spring for the paid version to get rid of the pesky watermark. Draft quick calls to action and share on client social networks.

Audible –  Audiobooks in the cloud

A la Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, one of my favorite principles is “Sharpen the Saw.”  I’m a bibliophile. If I find a book I like, I can read it in 2 days, if not less. But since in addition to being a busy PR pro, I’m also a mom and I spend so much time in my car. So  I found the Audible app a great solution to the “in-the-middle-of-a-great-book-but-now-I-have-to-stop-and-go-pick-up-the-kids-from-school” conundrum. Audible lets me listen while I drive – so I maximize my time, and actually find myself looking forward to the commute.

Flipagram – Short photo slideshows set to music

You probably noticed this app around the New Year, when people started sharing their 15 second Year in Review photo slideshows over music. I immediately thought about the implications for PR pros – especially those of us who organize events for our clients. What a great way to recap an event for social media. Simple, easy and fun.

Hotel Tonight – Book a room tonight.

Next time you have to hop a last minute train or plane in the name of PR, use Hotel Tonight to get a good deal on a great room at the last minute. This is how it works – at noon each day, the hotels in participating cities will  put a limited number of special priced rooms on the app for that night only. Once you have an account, you can log in, reserve your room and pay all from your phone.  I love this app, and used it last year to book an ocean front room in Fort Lauderdale for under $200.
