PR Jobs (Lite) of 8/30

public relations jobs, marketing jobs, communications jobs, pr jobs and social media jobs courtesy of Mopwater PR Get HiredSo there aren’t many jobs on this list, but please know I’m posting this from 1-95 northbound to New York. My internet is surprisingly strong, I’m on a borrowed Virgin Mobile MiFi mobile hotspot.

I wanted to send you these jobs-I know it’s not much-but I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance to blog again, and I’ve had blogger’s guilt for the past week. I did not post one time.

But in other news, I spoke about blogging last week and helped my client successfully orchestrate a TV spot. So I wasn’t just lazing around the house. I was busy doing my PR thizzle.

Here are your jobs: hope one of these sparks your fancy. And if you have a success story like Keshia’s let me know!

Amanda

p.s. Happy Anniversary to Margie Newman and the DC Flacks! Congratulations on an awesome year of meet-ups!

In Retrospect, @NYTimes Reporter Would’ve Studied Statistics Instead of #Journalism

In Retrospect, @NYTimes Reporter Would’ve Studied Statistics Instead of #Journalism

Nowadays, what do you need to become a good journalist? Some may rush and say “a journalism degree.” But what do you say? We all know that students are trying to figure out what to study, what’s necessary to make a living, what it really takes to cut the mustard. So, I  asked a working journalist what he thinks especially during these tough times.  See what this New York Times business reporter says:

Surprised?

Kristina Libby, a social media consultant I profiled last week said that she would have waited to get an MBA rather than rush to grad school. What do you think?

Like Mr. Nixon stated, whatever you end up studying should enrich what you end up doing, in Libby’s case, an MBA would give her the business sense to understand her business client’s problems and run her consultancy (whereas a degree in public relations would only help her understand PR and social media principles, best practices, ethics and tactics which are still important). In Nixon’s case, a more nuanced foundation of statistics would probably have aided his business reporting for the New York Times more than a journalism degree would have.

My take: When looking to get a degree, in the beginning follow your passions and after undergrad assess what you need after working a few years. School won’t necessarily teach you to do. Only doing can teach you to do. School can refine your knowledge, expand your networks and enhance your ability to do something in a niche way. But more on that later.

Get Hired: #PR, Media and Social Media Jobs of 8/2

public relations PR social media jobsGood morning and happy Monday to you all. I’m back from San Diego from the National Association of Black Journalists 35th Annual Convention where I met tons of journalists, a few other great PR pros, and got to present on a fun panel called “Turning Your Passion into a PR Career.”

There were so many good takeaways, but I’ll leave you with these three. One:If you’re looking for a job in journalism, diversify your skills with business reporting. Two: Business stories are always en vogue. If you’re a journalist, large public relations agencies are always looking for former reporters to bring into the ranks. Three: If you’re looking to turn your passion into a PR career, if you can dream it up, you can do the PR for it. So remember to focus on your true passions and dream BIG.

What New PR Pros Need to Know

What New PR Pros Need to Know

I recently had lunch with author, speaker and veteran PR Pro Deirdre Breakenridge. Deirdre is the President of hybrid communications firm Mango!, co-founder of weekly Twitter chat #prstudchat, and author of numerous books on public relations and social media including Putting the Public Back into Public Relations with Brian Solis. I asked Deirdre what advice she would give her daughter Meghan if she were graduating this year from college with a degree in public relations and communications.

I found Deirdre’s advice to be sage and applicable not only to students. I’d share this advice  not only a new graduate, but a person leaving a 9-5 to start hang out their own shingle, or someone who may be switching over from another industry to start their career in PR.

So many people want things quick and easy; but the truth is-even if our economic climate were great-if you want to build a strong and lasting reputation, you have to be willing to work hard and be flexible as she mentions. It’s a totally different business environment now.

Head on over to the Mopwater Facebook Page and say hi on the wall :)

Get Hired: #PR and #Media Jobs of 7/12

public relations jobs, marketing jobs, communications jobs, pr jobs and social media jobs courtesy of Mopwater PR Get Hired

If you’ve been looking for a job in public relations, communications, journalism or social media for over six months, you may be getting discouraged as many Americans who are searching for work have gotten after a long stretch of unemployment. But I encourage you to keep your search on and in the meantime continue to stay active in your professional organizations, with volunteer work, and networking events. Also don’t forget to reach out to local public relations firms like Mopwater PR that may be in need of an extra hand or intern to help out on rotating projects. These projects can be great resume-builders, and ways to get a great reference.

If you’re moping, brew yourself a cup of strong coffee and read this inspiring post about how persistence paid off for Kendall Wayland, a University of Central Florida grad who landed a job at Vantage Communications even in this dismal economy.

Then take a look at these jobs and send your cover letter and resume out.

Get Hired: #PR Jobs of 6/21

hire-me

As I scour the net for new job leads for those of you who are looking, it becomes more and more obvious, that social media jobs are becoming more readily available each week. So if you want a social media job, public relations jobs are there, so be encouraged. Keep looking. Keep that resume ready. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date.

An interesting thing I learned this week that I thought I’d share: some HR managers look more at your LinkedIn profile than your resume because you can’t lie on a LinkedIn profile since its public and you’re probably connected to your boss. Also they’re using LinkedIn profiles to do searches for keywords to find candidates. So get your profile optimized for search and get it to 100% completion by getting recommendations from your superiors, clients and mentors. Good luck!

Should I Get My Master’s to Advance my PR Career?

127070-main_FullDear Mopwater:

How have you been lately?

I have been doing quite a bit of thinking about my future and I felt that you would be a good person to seek advice from.

Honestly, I don’t want to go back to school for my Master’s but I feel like I should because [taking it back to grade school days] everybody else is doing it. I am fighting with this notion that higher degree equals higher positon; yet, I’m also fighting with the financial basics that higher degree equals more debt and will take longer to get out of.

I have learned a lot more in my work experience than school itself. I took a surprising turn from being a film major to taking my media skills and incorporating them into Marketing. My degree has definitely helped with the evolving interest in new media. I like what I do and I want to grow in it. Possibly transferring to a PR firm or large ad agency in the future. Who knows.

I just want to know can I achieve a managerial position with just a BA. I know that I may have competition with an individual obtaining a Masters degree, but if I gain enough work experience and provide an impressive portfolio — can I make it?

Sincerely,

Contemplating Graduate Degree

Dear Contemplating:

Thank you so much for reaching out.

More education DOES equal more debt. It just does. Don’t just do what your friends are doing if you honestly don’t feel it’s necessary. I’m a firm believer in on-the-job training; and there’s so much changing in our industry that on-the-job training probably makes more sense right now anyway. A lot of people probably wouldn’t like to hear me say that. But wouldn’t you rather work and get paid 40k to learn in one year than pay 40k to a school to learn the same things from a theoretical perspective?

HOWEVER, given the precarious state of our current job market, it may be difficult to even get your foot in the door to get the full-time job that offers you a salary while you learn on the job. So what do you do in this scenario? In this case, if you can get your education financed affordably and you’re not going to go into an insane amount of debt to pay off your degree, then consider it. But remember, a graduate degree is not a guarantee of a job or better job prospects. And the absence of a graduate degree on your resume won’t necessarily keep you from getting the job that you want. It all depends on you. So if you want to go to school to advance your public relations skills, you should go. But don’t just go because

a. everyone else is doing it

b. you’ve reached a career dead-end and don’t know what else to do, or

c. you think it will guarantee you a job.

Because there are no guarantees.

At the end of the day you should be prepared to walk away happy with the skills and knowledge you gained from your year or two in grad school, whether that nets you a new position or not. If you can’t say you would be okay with that, I wouldn’t commit to a graduate program.

I think that by asking questions, you are on the right track. You just may need to get your career on the right track. I’m not sure where you are working, but if you are trying to get into a management position at an agency, you need to be working at an agency. If you want to do non-profit PR, get at a non-profit. If you want to go association, get at an association. If you want to own your own firm, start freelancing. If you want to rise to the top at an agency, you need an account executive position. You may even need to to start with an internship position which I’m sure that you can get. If you are hungry enough, anything is possible.
